We would like to welcome artist Kirsten Rae Simonsen, who is joining us at the residency for the month of July!
Kirsten received her MFA from the University of Chicago. Before that, she studied traditional Balinese painting and drawing in Bali, Indonesia for a year at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) and with a master painter in Sukawati, Batuan. She has shown her work nationally and internationally, with work shown at Root Division in San Francisco, Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago, Pterodactyl Philadelphia Gallery in Philadelphia, and The Residence Gallery in London, to name a few.
During her stay, she will be exploring and creating a bestiary. A bestiary is a collection of beasts with accompanying descriptions. Medieval bestiaries often acted as natural history texts, although many of the beasts were mythical, such as the griffin or a goose that grows from trees. She has her own photos to draw and paint from, taken during numerous trips to the Field Museum in Chicago and a recent trip to Glacier National Park.
You can see more of her work on Instagram: @behomebeforedark.
