Welcome Christina Hale!

We are excited to welcome Christina Hale to the Residency for the month of November! Christina was born in San Francisco and raised in Los Angeles. In high school she was influenced by the paintings of Marta Chaffee and Sam Francis...inspired by their work she began to focus on painting living in Oakland. Christina studied painting, film and drawing at the San Francisco Art Institute. After two years she returned to U.C. Berkeley, graduating with a BA in Art. While at UCB she worked at the Berkeley Repertory Theater and studied music at Laney College in Oakland. She moved to New York City in 1996, invited by my sculpture teacher Irv Tepper and taught summer school art in Brooklyn and Harlem as well as beginning to draw seriously. A curator she met there, Jim Harithas would later introduce her to Paul Schimmel and Robert Berman. Egon Schiele, Botero, Pollack, Klimt, Basquiat, Raymond Pettibone, R. Crumb, Sam Francis and S. Clay Wilson are her primary influences in painting and drawing. She admires writers such as Celine, Hunter S. Thompson, Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, William Burroughs, Lester Bangs, Sartre and Nietzsche. She studied poetry with Ishmael Reed at UCB and studied documentary film with Les Blank and admire George Kuchar, Werner Herzog, Kubrick, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Matthew Barney etc. Her drawings are part of both the Achenbach Museum and LACMA s permanent drawing collections. She has been inspired by graffiti....Twist, Eskae, Crayone, Dream, Con One, Miner, Chaz Bojorquez, Dash One, David Choe, Banksy.... Currently she surfs, and studies acting with Rob Reece and draw from a small studio and is represented by the Robert Berman Gallery and herself. Check out her website and drawings below!
